Gen1 rpm/speed

okay so i drove a friends 94 camry. it drove about 55mph(close) at 2k rpm.
my 90 camry used to drive 50mph@1.8k rpm. now its driving 45mph@2k rpm. is this a sign of compression loss or transmission wearing out. because i would probably get alil better mileage if it ran like it did b4. and wuts ur speed at 2k rpm(wut i usualy drive at to conserve gas and cruisin speeds)

tranny:stock with 229k miles, seems to runs fine when i gun it. when switchin from neutral to drive, it kicks in not smooth though driving it normal is smooth.
engine:new spark plugs recently lol and a short cone air filter.

Could be a lot of things including different trans/diff gear ratios. If concerned about the engine do a compressor or leak down test.

It sounds like the torque converter isn't locking up anymore. Do the RPMs bob up and down if you go from higher throttle to lower throttle (but not all the way off)? Once the torque converter is locked, it should stay constant...

Try driving a bit faster to see if you can get it to lock up. You will get very similar mileage driving up to about 65mph. The clunk going into drive could be motor mounts or an old transmission or transmission fluid.

With coolant hot, trans in Drive, O/D switch on, drive at steady speed of 47 MPH. Lightly depress the throttle, if RPM jumps significantly the converter is not locked up.

rpm drops slowly as mph goes down until it reaches about 1.2-1.5 rpm( around) then drops a the gear into third and second...etc.....(my muffler is just loud so i can hear it lol.

downrev = engine slowing down the car

Most of this article is true for the Camry:
http://ezinearticles.com/?Torque-Con...ckup&id=113485

And I'm sure there is other info out there. It doesn't sound like a serious problem (or even a problem at all), based on what I have heard so far from you.

I'm not sure when the torque converter locks up on the A140E (normal 4-cylinder auto), but on my A540H (AWD 4-cylinder auto) it locks up near 2krpm in 4th, below that, it is generally unlocked. Funny enough, I actually have to mess with the throttle pedal to get it to lock up at the speed of most of the roads on my way to work (40 and 45mph limits), so I've been paying attention to it a lot lately.

Are you sure you aren't stuck with the O/D off or in PWR mode or something? That is almost the difference between 3rd and 4th gears on your transmission.

It isn't a fair comparison to my auto Camry - it has a different transmission. Somebody else will have to chime in on RPMs vs. MPH vs. Gear.

i always use O/D because O/D is a 1500~ difference in rpms. and i dont use pwr mode.( it only makes the car shift at a faster , and at higher rpm anyways)
