91 camry electrical problems need help please!!!!!!!
Hi i just got a 91 camry dx and i have some problems with the car.
1. The reverse light is not working, bulbs are good but there's no power going coming out of the terminals. I checked the wires that came out of the tranny like the other thread says and it looks good but still not working.
2. The charge light stays lite on the dash board so is the hand brake light even though the lever os down and car is running? any ideas?
3. There's no sound coming out of the speakers even though the volume is out and yes i checked the all the wires behind the new deck i installed.
4. Everytime i put i fuse on the dome light spot near the battery fuse box it keeps popping, as soon as i put the 20 amp fuse it pops right away
The car was a payment to me by an old guy i did some job for and it still drives really good just these few problems Do any of you have any idea???
I think that I would check out the charge light and the 20 Amp fuse first. Call around the local auto parts stores and see if any will do a free alternator check (Auto Zone does this around me in Houston). Take the car in and see if your charging system is OK. It could be that the indicator is right and there is something wrong with the charger and/or battery.
Several diagnostics for various radio problems include a check on the dome fuse. Since you are having radio problems you might want to disconnect the radio from the car and then try the fuse again. Could you talk with the former owner and see which, if any, of these problems were happening when he had the car? (And had the old radio installed.)
By any chance, does your camry have a sun roof? Something about its relay is tied into the dome fuse.
You might want to start keeping notes of the various things that you eliminate. This may take a while.
Luck,
Kep

Often, it's the loose screw between the steering wheel and the driver's seat that needs to be fixed first!
1. Check the reverse light switch. Also, check the loom of wires inside the trunk, by the driver's side trunk hinge. Wires in there have a tendancy to frey and break over the years from all the flexing the loom is exposed to as the trunk is constantly opened and closed. Note the coloring of the wires right at the reverse light bulbs and check those wires. Open up that loom and inspect carefully for breaks in those colored wires.
2. You have a bad alternator. Get it checked as Kep suggested and I'm sure you will find it is not charging. If so, install a rebuilt alternator.
3. Was there any sound with the old deck in there?
4. I really am not sure what you are saying here, but it seems you have to check all circuits that dome light fuse protects for a short to ground. Disconnect each item that fuse protects (if you can) and then see if the fuse doesn't blow. When you have isolated the device that is causing the fuse to blow this way, you will need to inspect that device's wiring carefully for a short to ground.
Thanks a lot for your help, im going to check the wires later and see if i can get my alternator check too. also i have a sunroof but it doesn't work i think the mechanismn that holds it got lose or something coz i can move it or push it back, do you think this is something i can fix or do you think i better leave it to the professional?

If it's not a fuse or an obvious and simple wiring problem, then it's something best left to a professional. This might even be something best left to a dealer.
I mentioned the sun roof because I found a reference that part of its electrical function (it said a relay of some sort) was tied into the dome light (and you were having problems with that fuse blowing). My thought being that that may be something to check while you're investigating the dome light fuse.
I'm still curious if the dome fuse problem started after the radio was replaced.

thanks guys for your input. i got evrything working now except for the sunroof. It turns out that my alternator is ground which is causing the lights on the dash board to turn on and the dome fuse to pop, i went to pick n pull this morning and got a replacemnt one for $30 and everything is working great now. also i had to change the fuse on the driverside kick panel and fix the a/c swicth and the tail lights, im not sure how but everything seems to work perfectly now other than the sunroof. Oh and i puuled the radio out and tried on on a different car and still no sound so i guess it the radio itself, i just got to buy a new one the other one was old anyways. But thanks you guys for all your input I really appreciate it.
