I lost 5th gear and Reverse -- any ideas on how to fix?

My shitbox pops out of 5th gear, so I have to hold it in when I drive. Well, after a bad day, I took a little anger out on the shifter when it popped out and slapped it back into 5th. It must have overshot something, because it was free-revving with the shifter in the 5th gear position, and was stuck. I had to pull over and wrestle it out.

1/2/3/4 work fine, but 5th and Reverse now are "empty". I have my wife move the shifter around, so I see how the shift pattern works where the cables come into the transmission, or that little module thing there. When the stick is pushed far right, the "boot" gets pushed in, and moving the stick between 5th and Reverse does move the other cable. I'm guessing it's something inside that box.

Any ideas?

I bought a Gen2 transaxle with this exact problem once. I opened it, and found the bolt connecting the #3 shift fork to the #3 shift fork shaft had come out. It was just sitting there in the transaxle, so I screwed it back in and it worked fine.

You can get to this bolt by removing the cap on the side of the tranny. I had the tranny out of the car at the time, so I'm not sure if there's enough room to do this with it still in the car.

Yours may have broken, fallen out, or the problem could be something else in there. The Haynes manual has some good diagrams of the transaxle.

Would you say is it easy to fix it myself or does it require a mechanic?
