A/C Diagnosis

I have an 89 Toyota Camry which the A/C doesn't work. In last trip to the shop, pressure was checked, found a leak, repaired, checked compressor (ok), and added freon. When A/C switch is pushed compressor kicks on for 5 seconds and goes off and begins blinking. Mechanic chased wiring back to A/C amplifier. Any ideas about diagnosis. Is replacing the A/C amplifier as help in diagnosis and does that eliminate anything. Used part is about $40 and if that helps eliminate something, we are willing to try. But I don't want to waste lots of money trying to get a diagnosis. Any help or suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Lenis

I do not think the problem is amplifier.
Need some info:
Where the leak was located?
What type of Freon was added?
If the problem shows as follows; the a/c compressor starts then stops and after that the light starts to blink, one of the possibility will be restriction in the system possible receiver drier. Then the pressure builds up and the safety overpressure switch disengages the a/c compressor clutch.
If light is blinking first and then the compressor stops, the problem can be the compressor rotation sensor assuming the belt is tight. If the engine cooling fans are running at the high speed with engine cold and a/c on the system is over pressurized.
