1986 camry tranny question

Hi folks,

I'm new to toyot, great site here. I recently purchased a 1986 camry with 74,000 original miles on it. I paid a little more than I wanted to, $650 but I got it from a recently widowed nice lady.

Anyway the car needs some work, I noticed that when driving at highway speeds around 50 mph or so the transmission "overdrive off" light flashes on and off periodically.

Is this normal for a camry? or does anyone have any ideas on this?

This car also leaks water into the trunk area, looks like small rust at rear windshield moulding, is this common? Any suggestions on repair?

thanks

For transmission, short Tt terminal to the E1 terminal of in the diagnostic box, and turn the ignition on, but don't start the engine.
Count number of blinks from o/d off light,[four -pause- two- long pause , for example means code 42] then unshortwen the terminals and turn ignition off
Post the number you get here

Rust is common around the top part of the rear window top right and top left (When looking at the car from the rear) areas. Mines has rust spots there. Also, check the roof 'gutters' as they tend to rust out up there and eat the roof. THe trunk also rusts out (check around the sides where the weather strip is, mines leaks there. Also, take off the tail lights and check the body underneeth the tailights. Two gen1's I've had all had rust there also.

No terminal Tt

I don't see a terminal Tt in my diagnostic box, the only ones that begin with T are "T" and "Tem" .

This car runs pretty good except when going into second gear it really bogs down, takes a long time to gain speed. Almost like it is going from 1st directly to 3rd gear. I have been manually putting it in second with the shifter to gain speed then putting it back in the "D" position.

Any ideas?

It's not Tem it's TCM. Use (TCM) and E1 terminals to get the Diagnostic Codes.

Is TEM terminal located at 2 by there terminal cluster [closer to the windshield of the car, farther from the radiator?]
Do you have power/normal push button near the hand brake?

yes ,2nd cluster

TEM is located in the second cluster nearest the windshield, it is the 2nd terminal on the left hand (drivers) side of the box. Yes this car does have the normal/pwr switch by the handbrake. I tried driving with the pwr switch enabled it didn't seem to make a difference, thanks

On my car [87 Camry] the transmission test terminal is labeld Ect and located next to Tem
It is located in the upper right corner of the 3 by 2 cluster, closest to the driver side mirror.
This terminal must be grounded to E1 with jumper.
