Safe to run with no thermostat?

1990 Camry with a V6... I've been battling an overheating problem and think it's the thermostat. I had replaced it last week with one from NAPA (no jiggle valve) but my symptoms remained (idled all day with normal temps but go hot on the highway, temps would drop when I revved the engine, but crept back up).

I removed the thermostat today and buttoned her up without it and I'll be darned, she ran from half to 3/8's on the temp gauge all day with the AC on.... I know some newer cars don't run right without the t-stat, is this car one of them? I don't mind it taking longer to warm up.....I live in Florida and it's been Africa hot here.

A little while back my thermostat failed...so it was in a half open/ half closed state....and i had it running like that for about 3 months before i got it fixed.....

the car was fine with it. Just in the winter it would not put out any heat on the highway ......so that sucked....

city driving was just fine!
