Fuel Leak

So i was walking past my Camry in the driveway to get the mail and noticed that it smelled like a gas pump when i passed, so i took a look under the car, and the Gas Tank is covered in leaking gasoline.

Its always smelled like fuel when you sit in the back seats right after you shut the car off, but i never really thought it was from a leak. I just bought the car 3 weeks ago, and before i bought it sat for maybe a couple months?

Mine was leaking from the tank vent hose fitting.
Check the fuel pump and gage opening flange, as it seems to come from the front.

I honestly have no idea where the fuel pump would be on my own car, so i wouldnt even know where to look. To me it looks like its leaking at the seam, but there was more gasoline above the seam? so that doesnt make sense. I guess ill have to drop the tank.

And i just put 50 bucks in there too.

The fuel pump connector is accesible by removing the rear seat cusion [sedan] or folding it forward [wagon]. You must start there in order to remove fuel pump connector prior dropping the tank[the pump is in the tank} the fuel level connection is also needed to be separated

They do it outside of California.
The cause of leak needs to be located before bying a new tank.

Well i wouldn't be replacing the tank, a shop will. So i was wondering if it would be wise to have the shop buy the tank from Toyota (i pay cost he pays) or buy it from a junkyard (where it could be just as bad as mine...)

And you can buy gastanks on Long Island, im pretty sure.

Before you condemn the tank, find the leak. It probably is not the tank but a fitting whose gasket has failed. If I needed a tank I would probably get one off a junked car but I've never tried so atobe may be right and they may not sell them. If you're going to a mechanic they prefer putting on new equipment that they can stand behind, not used parts that may fail.

And this why finding the fuel pump or level sender is difficult!

UPDATE.

I dropped the tank, and the top of the tank is rotted severely, so are the braces that hold it in, as well as the sender lead, and im assuming the fuel pump is shot.

I can see the gas inside the tank... from outside of it. Thats kinda scary.

Im assuming it was because of it sitting for a few years on grass on the North Shore of LI before i bought it.
