2nd Generation Seatbelt Replacement

Hey All,

I just received (pretty much as a gift) a pristine 90 Camry DX. The only thing wrong with it is the windshield wiper fluid doesn't come up, even the paint job is immaculate.

...Until I started driving it...

I have seen other people on here saying that they have had problems with their seatbelts not locking. Mine don't either, and frankly, it concerns me greatly, especially since there is no airbag in the car.

I'm wondering if there's a way this can be fixed, if anyone has gotten theirs fixed, and how much it cost.

I'm also just wondering if I could replace the entire thing, and just put in a normal seatbelt rig in the front (as in not the ones that retract when you shut the door). Has anybody done this?

Thank you!

Please check my sticker thread about seat belt repair. It may help you to troubleshoot the electrical circuit.
the Canada /non -US models have manual belts; I do not like the automatic belt either.

i did look at that thread. its not a problem with the seatbelts coming into place, its a problem with them not locking if i slam on the breaks.

ie, i dont want to fly through my windshield...

I believe that there was some concern about this too for the Cressida.

They should lock, but since there is no 'sudden' force of stoping (the car), they don't lock up. I know, it's not like typical belts where you can pull fast and they lock up. Try go to a parking lot and slam hard on the brakes and see if they stop. A few people had the same problem with their Cressida and when they did the brake check, the belts actually 'lock'.
