Low Idle

When stopping at a stop light, RPM's go down to about 500. Car shakes quite a bit until I press gas and get RPM up to between 800 and 1000. I can not figure out where the "screw" is to adjust the idle, which I think could fix the problem. Any ideas? A guy down at the Kwik Kar shop tried adjusting a couple of bolts on the actual accelerator wire, but said the wire must be worn because it has slack in it and the idle can't be adjusted until I replace the wire. Help?

Try cleaning the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve on the throttle body. This controls idle RPM.

If you remove the big tube leading to the throttle body you will see a square or diamond shaped port in the base of the throttle body. That port leads to the idle air control valve. You can spray throttle body cleaner or O2 safe carb cleaner liberally down in to that port and let it soak for about 10 minutes. Then reattach the big tube and start the car. Most times this cleans the idle air control valve. If it doesn't, you will have to remove the idle air control valve to clean it more thoroughly.
