Question Ignition switch bad????

I have a 1989 Camry. Occasionally (several times a week) it won't start when the ignition switch is turned on. No click, no starter motor running, etc. You have to try it several times before it will start.

The starter and solenoid have been changed recently with no luck. The ignition key is loose when inserted so I'm guessing it's the switch that is causing my problem.

Anyone have similar problems? How hard is it to change the ignition switch? The dealer wants $280 including re-keying it.

Thanks for the info. I'll start with a new key and lube the switch - that's the cheapest way to go.

The loose key is not typically and indication of a good or bad electrical component of the ignition switch, just the tumblers. However, it does show the switch has been used a lot and could well have an electrical problem. However, don't be surprised if you need to troubleshoot the electrical part of the switch to determine which function/wires (there are several) are at fault.

Right, but I may as well start with the easiest and cheapest part. We need new keys anyway since it will just pull out of the ignition without turning the car off.

put it in park, get a screwdriver and take the small wire off the starter, take the screwdriver and jump the big terminal to the small blade next to it and the starter should crank every time you short it

I've already replaced the starter and solenoid assembly with no change. I have had that go out in the past, but you can hear a click when the ignition switch is on. Also, with bad solenoid contacts, you have to try over and over to get it to finally start. The problem now is that it won't click or start at all, but it does on one or two more tries.

I had the similar case and ended up installing $4 relay in the starter control circuit. The weaker current is still able to operate relay which will apply the power from the battery to the solenoid [ign] terminal.
With such set-up I should not worry about neutral safety switch condition or burned ignition switch.

Good idea! I'll keep that in mind if the problem is still there.

Can you give a litle more detail about how to do that Doctor J? What kind of relay. I have the same problem. I just installed a starter button that runs from the pos terminal to the starter. It'd be nice if it would start with the key though.

Sorry for delay; I have posted reply to the similar question about a year ago, let me find and re-post it.
