transmission stuck

Hello to all,

I just joined the the Toyota Forum cuz I have an 89' Camry that's been having a bad time shifting outta park unless I use the manual overide button.

In addition, when this happens my stop lamps fail to light up. I've heard that the switch underneath the brake pedal has gone bad. If this is so can anyone tell me what to expect to have the dealership repair this??? Also how long can this repair take???

Any quick responses are welcome and appreciated.

Replacing the switch should cure the "shift lock" problem; the switch should be fairly easy DIY project.
Do you have cruise control in the car?

Doctor J,

Thank you for your swift response!!! I hope the switch is the problem cuz if it's the transmission itself I might have a cow.

Question, will that also cure the brake light issue too??? This Saturday I have an appointment with my Toyota delaership to get that repaired. They already ordered the part so it should be waiting for me when I arrive first thing in the morning.

Yes, I do have cruise control but in reality I never use it.

I just rolled over 230K and my 4 door Camry has been rock solid for me all these years including the engine and transmission.

I can only hope it'll be a quick fix and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg cuz they just did my 230K service.

Let me know .

If I will do it I would also do some troubleshooting to make sure that nothing else other then the switch caused this problem [no charge for TN members unless oterwise specified}; the switch is $15 from Kragen.

Doctor J,

Many thanks for the price of the part. Now I can get an idea of how much the charges will be from the delaership as I decided earlier to have them handle the job. For 15$ I can handle that at least. Your also right in having them look more into the other possible causes but I still hope that the switch is the main cause. My busy schedule tomorrow is really killing me. Wish/cross for me that it can be repaired with in reasonable time limits.

In reality I guess I can thank this happening cause I never knew this site existed expecially for Toyotas. You canexpect many questions in the near future from me.

Thanks you all for your responses.
