Low Temp Thermostat

Has anyone tried running a 160 thermostat for a 3S-FE? I had a 180 in there, but was still getting bad detonation in hot weather.

Is 160 too cold for the engine's computer? At what point does it come out of open loop and warm-up mode?

You have something else wrong with the car if it is pinging noticably on 87 octane gas. Either run 89, or fix the problem (ign timing, carbon buildup, etc).

I'm not sure who makes a lower temp thermostat for our cars, but I think I might have seen them for sale on standard auto parts websites...

I've been running 89 octane for a few months now. I can avoid it if I accelerate slow, but accelerating normally gets the engine pinging (only in hot weather).

I've got new plugs (correct type), wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, and the timing is 10 degrees exactly.

Didn't think of the EGR valve, I should check that next.
