Might buy a 1991 Camry (base model) from coworker for $600 CDN

Hi,

My colleague is selling his 1991 toyota Camry. It's got only 110k km on the engine! But it's the base model...i.e. manual tranny and no air conditioning. It has power windows, steering and door locks though. The rear passenger side window regulator is broken (won't hold the window up) and the passenger side front door was hit during a minor accident. The interior is in absolute pristine condition and mechanically is supposed to be excellent except that the motor burns about 1 litre of oil per month. It has 4 steel rims and 4 decent tires. It's the original clutch. There's a brand new battery, new rear shocks and universal joints. Everything (except the rear window) works perfectly. He's been driving this car to and from work everyday even during winter. I've read some great reliability stories about this car. I would be using this car as a half-daily driver if that makes sense. I have a 2001 BMW 740i but wouldn't mind giving it a break every now and then from the daily commute (and to save money on gas). My colleague is pretty firm with the $600 asking price. Anything else I should look at? I feel like I can keep this car for even just a year and still sell it for this much next year or just part it out later. What do you think?

The oil leak sounds like your main first problem. If it leaks out onto the ground, are you comfortable keeping your standard parking areas clean? It's hard for me to imagine it burning oil at only 110k km. If he is the original owner you might press him for more info on where (and maybe why) it's leaking.

At $600 it's hard to go wrong, even if you wind up putting in a new engine.

If you are comfortable with a manual they are preferred for longevity as well as cheaper to replace and repair. They are a pain in stop and go traffic.

Id go for it , I drive a 88 camry wagon for my commute to work and my pocket thanks me because its pretty good on gas . Personally I think the manual transmission would be a lot better than an automatic so that's even better !
