check engine light in 1990 camry

Hello,
I have a 1990 Camry that has been running fairly decently for the 2 years that I've owned it. A few little problems here and there but overall, a great car. Recently, the check engine light came on and also, almost at the same time, the dashboard lights have gone out. So if we are driving at night, we cannot see our speedometer or gas gauge or anything of importance! Anyone know how to fix either of those problems?

First try to read the check engine code by shorting T1and E1 terminals to diagnostic box;
I could speculate that code 11 can be present.
Next, are only cluster illumination lights went out, or the heater panel the glove box lights and the cigaret lighter illumination was lost also?
With engine OFF ignition ON are the warning lights on?

Where do I find the diagnostics box? How do I short those terminals? (Sorry... I don't know much about fixing cars, but I can figure it out if I know where to look).

I will check the other lights tonight when I get home. I think it's only the dashboard lights right behind the steering wheel.

shows location, and terminals you need to short, then turn ign ON , with enguine off count the flashes example four-pause-two- long pause two- pause- two-long pause;
Codes 42 and 22.
Your Owner's manual should have page at the end of the book explaining this in better detials
