What ia a bolt-in replacement for a 2S-ECL

Just had the head redone on the wife's '86 Camry - she overheated the engine and cracked the old head in two - luckily the rings survived intact. So now, because of the better compression, the engine has a pronounced knock on start up when cold that seems to go away as the engine heats up. From reading another thread on the board I'm going to change to 10-40w high mileage oil from the 20-50w I've been using as a temporary fix and get the engine to last as long as possible.

However, when the thing eventually dies, I will most likely replace the engine since the car is absolutely mint. I understand 2SE engines are sort of hard to find, and I have a good '89 4AFE, wiring harness and computer out in the garage. Will the 4AFE bolt up to the 2SE auto tranny? IF not, will the 4AFE and it's automatic tranny bolt into the '86?

BTW: what typically causes the knock in a situation like this? Rod bearings? main bearings? piston pins? And is it easily fixable on a weekend or two?

Thanks!

The 2SE engines still can be found, just that they are not as much available as the 3SFE (The 3SFE was a much more 'applied' engine in the toyota line). The 2SE was found in the SV10 '83~'86 Camry (LE and Deluxe) and the ST161 '86 Celica (GT and ST).

I'm not sure...highly doubt that the 4AFE is a direct fit (and also with the A140E). Different 'series' of engine and tranny. Then again I'm not the expert in this, so I'll let other to confirm this. I know that a guy here was swaping in a 5SFE into his Gen1 Camry, but I don't think that the engine mounts would line up...at lease I don't think they don't since my mom's Gen4 5SFE looks totally different where the mounts are on my Gen1 (one example is the dog bone mount on the passenger strut wall).

Thanks for the reply.

From some more digging on the site I found a thread that stated that a 3SFE should bolt in in place of the 2SEC if I need it - so that's cool. One guy I talked to told me that when he had an engine on an older Toyota go out, he just bought another simlar model for cheap that had a good engine and replaced what needed to be replaced since the cost was about the same as an engine, and scrapped the rest - so that's one possible future avenue.

Also I deduced that the knock is possibly a wrist pin in one of the pistons because it knocks when the car first starts, but then gradually goes away as the car warms up a rod bearing wouldn't do that. From talking to a couple of guys that work on cars alot it seems that if we let the car warm up before we drive it, the wrist pin should last for a while in spit of the knock. So it seems the plan of action right now is drive it until it goes out.

Anybody know if the 3SFE computer is different from the 2SEC computer? - my guess is they probably are.

Yea, I think the 3SFE has a fair amount of differences between the 2SE.

If the 3SFE bolts in (if it does), that means the swap to a 2VZFE isn't much work. When my 2SE goes out the door, I would love to have something with more power. A V6 Gen1 is something that isn't done. Does anybody know if the 3SFE bolts in with stock mounts? Either way, there is a fair gain in power from the 2SE to the 3SFE.

If you're gonna go through the trouble of putting a 3sfe in you might as well do a 5sfe
