TE1 and T1

I'm trying to solve a pinging problem with my 3S-FE, and ran into a weird issue: On my previous car, jumpering TE1 and T1 would drop the idle to around 5-600 rpm. On this new car, jumpering them increases the idle by a few hundred rpm.

What's going on, which is right, or does it matter?

Pinging? If it's pinning, run higher octane petrol.

I had the same problem on my 3F-SE engine too. My mechanic cleaned out the EGR valve, EGRmodulator and the pipe that runs from the EGR valve to the manifold. It completely eliminated the pinging and gave me better acceleration. I passed California smog test with flying colors.

Putting 91 octane gas in was helping, but not anymore. It's very sluggish. The EGR valve is ok, but I haven't checked the BVSV valves. Flooring it (exiting the fuel map) does away with the pinging.

A few weeks ago, I pulled a code 21 twice (oxygen sensor open circuit) while going up long, steep grades on the highway, but it hasn't come back since.

I just went outside to measure the Vf and Ox signals with a hot engine at idle: Ox was fluctuating from 100-370mV using the engine block for ground, 90mV steady when using battery ground, and Vf was a steady 1.25V, indicating the ECU is trying to lean it out.

What I gather from this is that the ECU is leaning the fuel mixture, causing my engine to ping. Any ideas why? I'm hesitant to just go out and buy an O2 sensor for $100 before I can prove it.

To test O2 sensor, thanks to Doctor J:
With engine idling at normal temperature[ fan cycled once] in the diagnostic connector ,
Jump T and E1 terminals, increase rpm to 2500, at this speed using analog voltmeter set at 10 VDC attach the positive probe to Vf terminal and negative probe to E1 terminal or ground;
The needle must fluctuate between the 5and 0 more then 8 times in 10 second period
If mixture normal and O2 sensor is working

Problem solved: AFM was bad. Got one for $5 from the junkyard. Drives nice.
