tranmission fluid and oil leak

ok..so i changed my oil 2day,lord knows when it was last changed by the previous owner. i used pennzoil high mileage 10w-40. engine sounds alot smoother and idles alot more quiet now.

the mechanic at the shop took a look at the tranny fluid..it was black!
like motor oil he said to me ,dont change it..which i was planning to do 2moro. i drove the car home and showed it to my uncle..he also said the same.changing the tranny fluid will give me engine problems.

as far as the tranny..it works fine, like a new car. shifting is nice and smooth, strong. strong as in i was driving home one night and saw this chevy impala and a ford expedition goin at it at the lights,i got involved
this was the first time i used my ect button

from the light, the impala shot off from beside that v8 expedition while he was trying to catch. at this point i hit the gas and for almost a half mile..i was up behing the v8,he cudnt get away from my ole girl..i love my car!

are there any tranny additives i can use to prevent any problems?

about my oil leak, its to the right side of my oil filter on the other side of the engine..i would love to get a leak seal, one that actually works.

any ideas?

Chris

I have had limited success with AT-205 to slow oil leaks. It is supposed to make the seals more supple. It may help.

I have heard of several additives suggested for transmissions. I have no clue if any work. They each make their product sound indespensible. I elected to do a drain and fill when I let mine run 100k. This only replaced 2 quarts out of (I believe) 12 quarts in my 1990 3SFE. I did this twice every 6,000 miles just to make sure it didn't do any extensive damage. Then I stepped it up to every 3000 miles. I felt that this was a good comprimise. In the meantime I kept the old fluid thinking that if the tranny did start to slip I could drain out two quarts of the diluted fluid and add the old fluid back. That was the idea, I never had to try it. I successfully exchanged the fluid over about a year's time and the transmission worked fine.

Changing the transmission fluid will not give you engine problems. I would do a few drain and refills to get the old fluid out.

Your choice is not to change the trans fluid and be sure of future problems or change it and have minimal risk.

Do the drain and refill several times approach and don't worry. Except if you never change the fluid, then expect problems latter on.

The best trans prevention is to have fluid in good condition, this is red or reddish in color. Black means oxidized fluid and a shorter trans life.

2nd Generation Transmission Additive that has been tested

I buy, fix up and sell GEN2 Camry's exclusively for 2 years now.

When I have a dirty tranny oil situation I use LUCAS Transmission treatment.

When I do the drain (about 2 quarts or so comes out) I mix 12oz of LUCAS with reqular Dextron (because the LUCAS is too thick too go down the funnel).
DO NOT OVER FILL!

I have had wonderful success.

As a matter of fact I have had shift problems that have vanished after doing this.

Running a Tranny with dirty oil will always result in failure!

Trans-X does a good job as well..

I brought three transmissions back using the stuff; one was extremely slow to go into reverse (and stay engaged). One dose fixed it.
Another was slipping like nothing doing. Tightened it right up.

And the transaxle in the Camry is much better as well. I'll dump the other half can in when I do a drain/fill..

My thoughts tend to be leaning towards applying it "properly" to the guy that towed your car!

Just add it to the transaxle. Be cautious of over filling, but get at least half the can in..

If your tranny fluid level is correct, they make small hand pumps that you can put a small enough hose (I use the stiff plastic hoses) to fit down the transmission dip stick. (I didn't try it with a hot engine.) With one of these you can pump out just the amount that you want to refill with no mess. Otherwise you can drop out what you need from the drain nut but have a few rags handy.
