2nd Generation Catalytic Converter

So my cat is going bad and the guy at the shop suggests that I pay him 30 bucks to cut it off and put a straight pipe in it instead. Other than environmental hazards what are the pros and cons to just removing the cat?

Don't know if you have a flex-pipe section but if you do those are designed to allow movement and vibration. I wouldn't let anyone replace that with a solid section.

87 cars do not have underbody converter at all; it DOES not affect vibration; the flex section is attached to 12 inch long solid pipe with flange that bolts to underbody converter.
The underbody converter is installed AFTER the second O2 sensor that monitors the main 'manifold 'converter.
