Try to post pictures as many as possible so someone can spot the problem; and inspect all electrical connectors before attaching wiring!

Well bearings arived today and I put 2/4 the pistons in place. I would have put all 4 in today but pistons 2 & 4 had either a broken compression ring (2nd piston 2nd ring) or a missing ring (4th piston 1st compression ring) Now I know I just lost the piston ring on #4. not sure how #2 broke, anybody know where I can buy 1 cyclender of pistons rings? (rest are new already) I dont want to pay 50 bucks for 2 rings. any suggestions?

Just wondering why so many rings are breaking?
Did you remove ridge from the top of each cylinder bore?
Have you used ring compressor or at least .004 thick steel stock to wrap around the piston[and tape over the wrap]

progress : rings are on , new bearings are in, pistons are in, head is cleaned really well and new oem headgasket is on. bolts are star torqed to spec (36 ft lbs) intake cam is stalled and sealed (the front seal) tightened progressively 2,4,3,1 order. and I stoped there for the day. So far its all going smoothly. Tommarow I can recheck torque on rod cap bolts and then put strainer and billow on and put the pan on. Not looking forward to all those bolts.

thomas might have just gotten a death sentance. Somebody stole My cat. So now I have to decide is another 300+ dollars into the car is worth it. Frankly I like the car but I have a full plate. Anybody want a good engine with new pistons rings new head gasket new bearings new oil pump new water pump, and a very clean body for like 800 bucks? tranny ran nicely.

Can you not get a used cat cheaply at a wrecker? Maybe if you unbolt the manifold and cut the downpipe (thereby removing it all as one unit), you can get away with paying only for the manifold at a u-pick parts yard. The wrecker I used to work at had no idea the cats on the 3s and 5s engines were located at the manifold...only after I pointed it out did they start removing them!

California wreckers do not allow to buy the cats from them.
It is not a good idea to work on the car in front of nasty neighbors.

This may be considered as "tampered with" according to California smog regulations

Wow, Cali really does have the strictest smog rules outside of Japan! How frequently do you have to re-smog a California car? Every year?
