Tranny problems

My transmission (auto) in my 1991 es250 has been acting up as of late. When I crank the car and put it into gear (any) it revs up to about 1500rpms, hesitates, and then catches and the car jerks violently. What could be the problem here? I changed the tranny fluid about 1000 miles ago and it was doing this even before that.

This can be sign of low pressure [as forward and reverse are acting the same]
make sure that the fluid level is normal;
second, drop the pan and inspect filter [remove it ] and pressure regulator the spring loaded spool valve next to filter.

Well I don't really have a way to check the filter or any of that because the apartment complex I live at doesn't allow and fluids to be changed on the property. But I'll look into it. Thanks!!!!

Engine idles OK in Park and Neutral but revs up when put into any gear without any throttle input?

It seems as if the engine tries to idle high until it's warmed up, regardless of what gear it's in. And yes it revs up a few hundred rpms above what it's idling at when I put it in gear. Also when I put the car in park then ease off the brakes the car continues to roll forwards a few inches. It's really starting to piss me off.

The fluid level is above the hot mark when cold. I think it might be overfilled, but it was acting the same before I changed the fluid like I stated before. When I drop the pan and filter, what am I supposed to be looking for on that valve? Not much detail on that.

Definitely make sure the fluid level is correct. Being off just a little will definitely hurt the operation of the transmission (my A540 was about 1/2 quart high and it wouldn't downshift coming to a stop sometimes).

Regarding putting it in park... are you on a hill at all? Make sure to use the parking brake too. There is always some play forward and back while in park - you should always have the parking brake on when parking.

I know to put the parking/emergency brake on when on a hill, but I am speaking of just a few degrees of incline.

I appreciate the response. Should I just drain a small amount of fluid out and monitor it until it's correct?

Any automatic that is in park will move back an forth a few inches. Just watch in a parking lot sometimes, almost nobody uses their parking brake.

It would probably be best to suck the fluid back out the fill hole if you can find a cheap pump. Just take out a 1/4 or 1/2 quart, drive 4-5 miles, check the levels and repeat until you are at the correct level. Add a bit back if you go too far.

I know they're supposed to have some forward/rearward movement when in park, but mine seems extremely exaggerated compared to most any other auto I've driven. I'll get on adjusting the fluid level immediately. Thanks!!!
