*SOMETIMES* you can cut or unbolt the U-bolt that holds the muffler to the exhaust pipe, and wiggle & work the muffler off the pipe, if it hasn't been put on overly-tight, thereby salvaging a couple inches of straight exhaust pipe. Otherwise, you could simply cut the old existing muffler off & get an appropriate piece of pipe from the auto parts store to connect the exhaust pipe to the muffler, creating a splice connection. If you get a muffler from the wreckers, be sure to give yourself a good 2-3" of pipe to work with.
Even an exhaust shop should be able to set you up with a new standard muffler for cheap, as long as your exhaust pipe is in good shape. Shouldn't take them but 15 minutes for this job. Roll it by an exhaust shop and see what they want to charge you.
