2nd Generation windshield wiper motor

In order to replace the windshield wiper motor, Chilton manual sez to remove the cowl louver first, but on my 1990 Camry, I cannot see any way to remove the cowl louver. I only see an access hole to the left of the motor itself on the firewall. Am I missing something? Are the 87,88,89 models different than the 90/91? The replacement motor is ordered, I'm just looking at the replacement process. Thanks for any help. Tom Chubco Bear PS: The online manual does not show replacement process, only testing methods.

Haynes states to unplug the power cable, unbolt the motor and lift it off.

2nd Generation good to know

Thanks Toyo, if there is no cowl to remove, that's just less to the job. Without the cowl mystery, it looks easy. Later, Bear.

2nd Generation Wiper Motor Replace

When I did mine in my 90 I just unbolted it and pulled it out as far as I could to access the shaft bolt. just don't lose it down in the cowl.

I also had to make sure the replacement was stopped in the same position as if it it is not the wipers will seem to stop in the middle of the windoe (which mine did exactly that.
I then had to pull the motor back out and move the shaft mount aa couple of teeth till my testing it showed the proper stop position..

Good Luck...REMEMBER....Don't drop the bolt....

Thanks for that, Malayan. I can see that the motor arm (stopped) has to be pointed toward the driver's side to have the wipers at rest in the proper position. The access hole on the side of the motor installation helps us with seeing that lineup.
I was able to read and glean from other Toyota model installations (local library books) that what you say is exactly correct. The "Chilton" book (that I had) showed an installation that is unlike the '90 configuration, probably older models where one could remove the cowl. I can see that if one could remove the cowl louver, it would be a bit easier. I will try not to drop the bolt! Thanks again.

2nd Generation 1990 ww motor

Remove 4 motor firewall bolts, slide motor up and out of access hole. You can hook the ball joint claw to the edge of the access hole (there is a flat hook welded on the linkage arm), thereby holding it solid and steady. Pop the ball joint out of the linkage arm claw. Remove actuator arm and access hole rubber gasket from old motor and put them on new motor with actuator arm ball pointed toward the driver's side. Snap ball onto linkage arm claw and work motor into position on firewall with actuator arm pointed level at driver's side. Bolt it, wire it and run it.....it should come to rest in the proper position.
