Auto belt stopped - need electrical pdf plz??

(I did search. I found good threads -- but... I need that electrical diagram that expired in the other threads.)

My driver's side seatbelt is stuck in the extended position as of last week. So I removed the seatbelt computer box and started to attempt to probe the harness with my multimeter with no luck at all. I don't know the orientation of the harness (which pin is which number). I need help with diagnosing this problem, my multimeter doesn't seem to be reading much of anything at all, but I am confident it works so the fault must be with me.

I need to find a good ground, but could someone tell me where a good ground could be because I don't know for sure if that is the problem. I am using the metal that the seatbelt computer is mounted to as a ground point and am trying to avoid the painted areas.

Damn these electrical issues!!! I suspect the problem is the switch in my door that is causing the belt to not retarct when I close my door but honeslty I don't know how to get to the switch in my door, all I see is mechanical stuff, and I don't want to take my door panel off unless neccessary.

Please help I am so sick of driving with just a lap belt. Thanks in advance!

On another note, I find it amazing that with as much general "car" knowledge I have, I am finding myself very inadequate with real actual diagnosis of simple problems!!! I need to get my hands dirty more often I guess.

Download the “EWD90” PDF file from www.camrystuff.com, second generation
Good ground is the any bolt in the body within easy reach
The diagram above is not very good: there are 2 SPST normally CLOSED limit switches at the end of belt travel track, one of each end;
The automatic shoulder belt switch is located inside the door latch
  1. Remove panel from the pillar to expose 4-wire connector;
  2. Manually rotate motor shaft toward the seat about 1/3 of the way
  3. With the driver door open turn the key to the ON
If belt moves toward the windshield—the motor is good, check front limit switch and switch in the door latch.
If belt is not moving:
a] the motor or computer is defective;
b] the switch in the drivers door latch has bad ground or defective

Turn ignition OFF and separate 4 wire connector exposed at the first step.
This is the best point to start.
Using the diagram on the page number I specified in “seat belt repair”, test for continuity the wires to going to the door latch switch. One should have continuity to the ground with door open and another with door closed [‘either-or’].

If neither wire has continuity, suspect damaged ground wire; take the door apart and repair.

Okay, so I finally had a day off to work on this car, sorry for the wait without reply. But I've been working on this car for 3 hours now, I ended up taking out both front seats and basically pulling the carpet up as far as I could, looking for this elusive R1 (or in my case, the Q1) connector that you talked about, with no luck whatsoever. But I took every single panel off each door in order to see all the wiring and tracks, I even took out the entire center console (so my interior is pretty stripped).

First thing I did was manually turn my driver's side seatbelt motor by hand in order to back the seatbelt slider away from the front limiter switch, in order to close the switch circuit. I then turned the ignition ON and closed the door, the seatbelt slider went right back to the front switch limiter. So the motor is good, and it seems as though the door latch switch is good too if it activated the slider system when I opened the door (correct assumption?). But when I close the door, the slider would not retract at all towards the rear switch limiter, it just didn't respond at all. So after a bunch of confusion, I decided to back the seabelt off the front switch limiter, to make both switch limiters a closed circuit, and I probed each switch limiter via L4 connector and they both had continuity. So I am assuming by that, the switch limiters are both working from L4 connector.

So I started to follow the L4 wires around to try to find a short, but I found that SUDDENLY my seatbelts were working fine and it seemed to be some sort of bad connection within a connector (L4 perhaps?). So after many tests to make sure I couldn't duplicate the non-function of the seatbelt retracter sp I just taped up the L4 connector real good and tight and am in the process of putting my interior back together...

What a bunch of work for something so little! Especially given the fact that it was probably just my L4 connector, me taking my interior out just pisses me off!! I am a little bummed out that I didn't conclusively discover what the actual problem was specifically, because this would have been helpful to someone in the future, but what can you do...

Thanks for the help Doctor J (and Pauly) for your extra-ordinary responses and willingness to help the average joe-shmoe. I really do appreciate it.

- Jesse

Harness from door to Fuse Block

Pull the wires out from the door going through to the fuse panel passed the door hinge.

On almost all instances I have found that a broken (or near broken) wire in the harness that gets bent everytime I open or close the door.

I fixed the broken wire ,,Wrapped well with shrink tube.

Has worked great since and I finally got all the carpet back in and the car back together.

Good Luck!
