Hey everyone, This is going to seem like an odd request, but would someone be kind enough to take some pics of the power steering in a 2nd gen Camry for me with the 3S-FE engine? Asking as i'm fitting power steering to my car that currently has manual/standard rack and pinion steering. If possible, can you take particular pics of: >How the reservoir is mounted in the engine bay >where the high pressure and return hoses are mounted (seems to do a very funny loop and i'm not dropping the engine out, so it'll be tough) >where the pump is mounted (have a vague idea, but not 100% sure) >Which hose goes into what for the pump (where the hoses screw back in to the pump. Don't know which is high pressure and which is return) Many thanks and any help is appreciated
Do you have *all* the parts necessary? Any way you can to a junkyard and just take a look?
Also, note that the LHD and RHD steering racke and lines are somewhat different. The factory service manual should also have some drawings/diagrams that show what is what.

Wow! Thank you Greg!!!!! Thank you sooo much!!!!!!
And Charlie, yes, i do have all the parts. But the wrecker took it out for me. Also, i don't have a factory service manual and by service manual doesn't include many pics of it. Only the rack on the car. No schematic of where the pipe go. The rack looks exactly the same, except rotation 180 to suit your LHD.
Malayan, i think you're right about having to drop the cross members out. I could only move the rachet about 2cm and i still haven't un-done one bolt yet. Do you think it will be easier to take off the crossmember and exhaust or to just lift the whole engine out? And when you say muffler pipe, do you mean the whole system from the exhaust manifold or just the front end part where i'll be working?
i'll attempt to take some "photo's" of mine tomorrow for you. mines the same side so it should help a bit more. good luck with it. we did it to a falcon a while back and that wasn't so easy. and there's more room! lol!

you do realise if i do this i will own your soul for all eternity? cheers mate, anything for a fellow camrite!
haha, very funny mate XD. I was just going through another manual and stumbled onto some important information that wasn't in my other manual (yes, i have 2 service manual, don;t ask why) Anyways, it goes on about a vacuum sensor. What's that for? Where does it connect up to? It says there's a hose that's supposed to go over the sensor. Also, it says: "Clean the exterior with a suitable solvent ensuring that the solvent does not contact the pulley oil seal". If my memory serves me, i'm pretty sure i doused the whole pump with foaming degreaser spray. Does i mess up the oil seal in the pump or will it be alright?
You'll be fine without the vacuum 'sensor'. It isn't actually a sensor though, it is an idle-up valve that lets a little extra air into the manifold when the power steering pressure goes up at low engine speeds. There is an air pipe on the back of the manifold on the power steering models that connects to this and then runs up to the manifold near the A/C idle-up valve.
Oh, and the oil seal should be fine.

I've looked through 2 manuls and have searched everywhere, both on TN and the internet and I still kinda need help on two points. Please help me out.
1) Don't know how the universal joint should be positioned/aligned when the steering is straight ahead. How should it be?
Reason? I undid BOTH pinch bolts and didn't mark it. When i was removing the rack, it fell off. Can i just mimick the position of the uni joint in my uncles Camry to mine? Would that work? He's got a 3rd gen v6 Camry.
2)How do I 'center' the steering rack?
I bought it from wreckers and not sure it's straight (i.e. car will go in a stright line in current position) at the moment.

Thanks mate. But i don't think my phone can support mms. Plus, i lost the cable, so i can't transfer it to my computer, blow it up and print it. Whenever you're free and have time, you can take the pics of where the hoses are routed and mounted and the uni joint.
