Idle surges in Drive

My 85 Camry's idle surges up and down when I come to a stop when in Drive. It will shut off at times, but when in Neutral or Reverse it idles just fine, could this be my torque converter going out?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

What have you check so far? Did you check the TPS to make sure the idle contact is good? Or the AFM to make sure the flap is moving freely?

ironically the same problm took place on 88 camry with freewheeling torque converter stator; the engine rpm was going up and down every second similar like someone pulses the throttle [engine revs at pulses complaint]. It happened when coasting down around 45 mph

Just a thought, pull off the air hose and look it over closely for tears. Squeeze it when you look, it'll open the small cracks if they're there. I'm wondering if the engine torque is stretching the hose and opening a tear when you're coming to a stop. Don't know if it cause the symptom you're describing or not.
