89 Camry v6 wants to start but wont

Hello All,

Last week my girlfriend called me that her car was dead. It would not start and she said she notice smoke of some sort coming from the driver side front corner. That said she ended up getting it running and we drove it happily for the next week. Yesterday i replaced the cap and rotor and drove it to the grocery store and everything seemed great. This morning the car started but died a km up the road.
The car turns over, starts for a second then dies. After reading the forum im starting to believe the timing belt might have skipped a couple teeth. Any ideas? Good place to start?Anything will help.

Thanks Daniel

Check the dist. rotor first, see if it is arcing to ground. If that checks good, check the secondary coil wire for open circuit. Do a static timing check, put it on 10 TDC, and check where the rotor is pointing to, should be close to either #1 or #4 cylinder.

If hydraulic timing belt tensioner is weak, the belt can jump few teeth.
Before digging into timing belt :
Pull the codes;
Start it up with accelerator pedal depressed 1/3 down; if it runs but dies as soon as you let the pedal off, check the TP sensor adjustment; if that will not help
I would ask you to jump Fp and B+ connectors in the diagnostic box and attempt to start the engine If it starts and runs, inspect the fuel pump control circuit [AFM, circuit opening relay]
