Is there a way to hook-up a tachometer from inside the motor compartment?

If you need the place to attach one to work on the engine, the distributor has connector for this purpose.
If you need one to put an aftermarket tsch next to the instrument cluster, the wire is already comes to the back of the cluster[black color];it just not used for non tach equipped models.

If your tach has alligator clip, you need to get male spade terminal 1/4 inch wide and crimp short piece of wire into it. Strip the end of the wire, clip alligator on it.
If alligator is uninsulated, wrap electrical tape around the clip.
Take the round cap from the connector and insert spade into the slot.
You are ready to go.
