1991 3S-FE Automatic Transmission

I have a 91 3sfe auto trans. From what I understand, the transfer case and drive axle case are separate units. Do I need to fill them separately with transmission fluid or does filling the auto transmission also fill the drive axle case?

Do you have an AllTrac?

The filler plug for the differential is at the back of the transaxle close to the steering rack.

I would assume that the differential is separate on the 3SFE engine. I know it is separate on the 5SFE engines, so I'm assuming the 3SFE is the same.

One additional bit of advice if you do attempt to drain and refill the differential. Remove the fill plug first. It avoids panic if you remove the drain plug and then have problems removing the fill plug. Don't ask me how I know this.

Transmission Fluid

If your transmission is the A140E (which I think it might be) The differential and the main part of the transmission have to be filled seperately. You fill the main part through the dip stick tube. To fill the differential you have to put the car up on jack stands (should have car level) and fill the differential. The plug is on the side. The differential is where the front drive axles are attached to the transmission.

2nd Generation hey Kevin

Kevin....you are talking about a ALLTRAC not FWD right?

From what I have seen on all the 140e that I have swapped for a "FWD" I fill through dipstick.

"ALL TRAC ONLY" have the extra little fill plug by the steering rack side right???
