88 camry won't start when cold

I have an 88 camry, when i start it when the motor is cold I have to try 6 to 10 times to get it crank. The starter turns but it wont stay running. It runs for a second the dies. After a bit it will stay running. I let it warm up it its fine. If I try to drive it after I get it crank it will just pop and die. Have done a new turn up. Plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor button, the only code I am getting is 51

Check the resistance of the "cold start time switch". It's the one under the brown plastic connector on the coolant port coming off the cylinder head, just to the driver's side of the engine as you are standing in front of the car. It's this sensor that is responsible for telling the ECU to richen up the fuel mixture for a cold engine start. You will need a digital volt ohmeter and the specs from any manual to do this. Even a bit out of spec can cause this cold starting problem. If it is out of spec, you will need to replace it. I believe this is a dealer only part.

On my most recent Corolla (4AFE) the switch tested within spec and it ended up being the cold start injector itself: it wasn't dripping any fuel into the plenum when it was supposed to.

2nd Generation U Pull It!

cold start time .. YES! I HAVE DONE A FEW...

At my local yard I could get both for cheap. Don't go to dealer unless no Yard available.....

As you will note that these are one of the first things to be pulled so get a fresh inventory car....

I even go to ebay before dealer...

DEALER = LAST RESORT!
