1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
There is a special edition "25th Anniversary of Toyota Canada" Camry down here in the junkyard. Any of the canadian members knows what was special about this car. It was a two tone grey and silver with grey interior. From what I've seen the car has front seat headrests with 25th anniversary crests embroidered into them. Also special badges on the front fenders which have since been ripped off. It's a V6 with 5spd tranny. Has sunroof and wing. So far I've taken the wing off the car to use on mine in the future. I will be going back next week to try to get the tranny off it as well. Anyone know of any rare options in that particular model? I didn't see any digi dash or anything out of the ordinary. I did notice that the dashboard was completely different from any gen 2 I've ever seen before but maybe that was because it was a v6. I dunno.
On a side note there is another camry down here in the yard not too far from it with a 3sfe and five speed setup if anyone wants all the pieces for a 5 spd conversion let me know and we can work something out where I'll get the pieces off the car for you.

Wait, Wing? Spoiler? I didn't know any Gen2 coming with a wing.
Yeah, I thought so...I have one, as pictured above. The only "special" things about the 25th Anniversary edition were the spoiler, the factory-installed Bosch Pilot fog lamps, the interior, the unique paint scheme, and the fact that a lot of them came in five-speeds, which were rare for the V6 Camrys. Of the other 25th Camrys like mine I've seen, about half of them have been standards.
I'm so f&*$ing jealous that you've found that car, I could actually cry. I've been hoping to find a replacement tranny for mine, as the synchros for third gear are starting to get annoying--makes for slower shifting. I could also kill for some body panels and doors, which are all rusty way up where I live. You'll notice, btw, that the guage cluster is in kmh instead of mph. I guess some Canadian snowbird drove it down there and then lost their license or some damned thing. These cars are getting extremely hard to come by.

Pictures of the interior? I wanna see the difference...
It's probably just a regular 1990 camry v6 interior. I'm not use to seeing that since I have an 87 4 cyl. I'll try to get some pics up later this week though. I'll be going back there wednesday morning early.

yeah it looked like yours. I wish it still had the fogs in it because they look like they'd fit perfect into my front lip. But yeah I'm going to try to get the tranny off it this week. I figured it was driven dow by a snow bird. the part where the wing bolted to the trunk was pretty much rusted through. But the interior in the car was practically immaculate!!! Were I still interested in doing a grey conversion this car would have been a gold mine.

Tim, was the 25th anniversary edition a Canada-only package? That would make that model ultra-rare to see in the US. Toyota seems to reserve all the anniversary packages for Canada.
When I was at the Cambridge plant last year, I saw a few 2008 Corolla 20th Anniversary Edition cars (marks 20th year of production in Canada). Nothing special other than badging.

Yeah, Bill, you're right: the anniversary edition thingy was only for the Canadian market. I'm not sure why they chose that way, it reminds me of the Carlos Sainz/RC GT-Four Celicas, none of which made North American soil. Toyota has not been consistent in their choice of market offerings. I cannot imagine why a tiny market like Canada would have deserved special limited edition Camrys, except for the fact that Toyota did remarkably well up here, on a per-capita sales basis.
I never knew the '08 Corolla came in a special edition. Odd that badges were the only extra.

I remember seeing a I4 Gen2 ('87~'89) on Oahu for sale a while ago. It had that 'never seen before' paint where the top was darker than the bottom (like that above). It didn't have the fog lamps or anything like that infront. It was a fully loaded LE w/ DIGITAL dash (and basket weaves!). Automatic though. Sometimes I wonder if that came from Canada since I never seen any Gen2 like that at all, but didn't had that emblem on the front fender.
I can't say for sure that Canada was the only NA market that got the two-tone paint scheme, but I have seen two other finishes other than the grey-on-grey that my V6 has. I've seen a brown-on-beige scheme (that actually looked really good) on an l4 Camry, and I've also seen what was probably a custom paint job: a dark-on-light red (also on an l4). The grey scheme on my V6 also came from the factory on l4 Camrys.
Given that shipping a vehicle to Hawaii would be prohibitively expensive, I suspect that the two-tone Camry you saw on the island was sold there new.

Never heard of or saw one of those! I did an extensive Google image search, but didn't see anything that looked like an OEM package. Did find this badass pic though!
Hah hah! Nice pics...when Toyota was still entering the 5th gen Celicas in pro rally comp, they had to qualify the platform by producing a certain number of factory units for sale to the public. The special editions (as I referred to them, the Carlos Sainz models in Europe and New Zealand, and the GT-Four RC in Japan) never made it to North America.
Until recently, when the cars became old enough to qualify under the more lax import laws (at least in Canada, not sure about US laws).
