2nd Generation Fuel Sender Question

I know I know, I'm full of questions. lol
I'm not stupid or anything.. just ignorant about import cars. Before my Gen2 Camry the only cars I've worked on were older model US cars.

So anyway, On the sending unit there's the float arm and float. I understand that.
But then there's a plastic box with a rod running down into it with a wire wrapped around it...then inside there's some other little things that I dunno what they are.
What I want to know is What is this plastic box, what is in it, why is there a rod wire a wire wrapped around it, and finally, what does all of this stuff do?

P.S. if there was black fuel goo in the bottom of the plastic box, would that make the gauge stop working?

The little box with wire wrapped around the rod is the thermistor housing for low fuel warning light sender.
[As Fred says] When it filled with the fuel, the thermistor is cooled down so its resistance is high and light is off.
when the box is empty due to low fuel level the thermistor heats up, allowing higher current to pass, so the light begins to glow.
Older European cars used to have float instead the thermistor so the light was flickering instead of glowing.

The gage will show empty if there is no continuity between the "wiper" that moves with the float and the other wire attaced to the resistor coil or resistor film.
the low fuel light and a gage are independent circuits.
