Camry Wagen Fuel tank Capacity/ low fuel light

Hey Gang.

I own a 1992 camry wagen(2wd, 3s-fe, auto trans, 214000 miles). I'm getting 24-25 mpg around town and 29-30 highway. My question is this: how many gallons will my fuel tank hold? I did not get an owners manual when I bought the car, but a couple of websites, and the "alldata" at a friend's shop all say 18.5 gal. REALLY?? That seems like a lot to me. My wife's Focus only has a 13.2 and my 1988 chevy van(1 ton, 350, 3.73 gears) only has a 22 gal tank. I have been trying to run it as low as a dare to see how much it will take. With the low fuel light on constant, and the fuel needle below the "E" line, it's only taken 14.3 gallons. While it is possible that fuel gauge/sender is not reading correctly, i think it is. If I fill the tank right to the brim, I mean really top it up( yeah I know it's not good for it, and kinda illegal in some states) I've gone at LEAST 120 miles before the needle even STARTS to move. A friend of mine also suggested just running it until it dies and carry a couple of gallons with me for when it finally runs out.

Any ideas or comments are welcome and appreciated.

thanks!!
Jake

Welcome to TN!
Your 1992 Camry is a Gen 3. This forum covers thru 1991 (Gen 2). You will probably get a quicker answer on the Gen 3 forum. That being said, my Camry low fuel light comes on when the fuel gauge is just about hitting E. I've driven it a good 25 miles (albeit very nervously) after the light comes on.

Sorry, looking at the wrong registration. The car in question is in fact a 1991 camry wagen. Sorry!
