Hey everyone, To repair rust around the rear windshield, i know you need to take the windshield out if you want to fix it properly by welding a new plate in. But in the process of removing and re-installing the windshield, can you do it at home with satifactory results? Or is it best left to the glass guys? Do you really need to have that special thing to melt the seal via electricity? Cheers, Jim.
Ugh, this is not a job you want to do yourself if you're inexperienced. Is there a local glass guy who can do it on the cheap for you? The chances are your rear defrost will never work again if you try it yourself--they're extremely finnicky. And in my experience, by the time you manage to get the piano wire around the glass to where you started cutting, the sealant will have sealed itself up again. It's a nightmare.
Maybe you could try removing the metal trim that surrounds the rear glass and epoxy the rust spots, then butyl on top of that? If, that is, butyl hasn't been outlawed as it has here...silicone could work in its place...
Good luck, whatever you choose to do.

Well, i was told it was approx $300 for a glass company to remove, hold/store at store(while i fix the rust) and re-install. Don't know if that's cheap though.
By epoxy, do you mean body filler? Don't know the rules on butyl use, but i would assume a no in my state. The previous owner has removed the trim and body filled one side of the windshield. But the otherside has developed rust as well. Is it worth spending that much just to repair the rust so that i can keep it for several more years? Instead of re-body filling it every year?
300 bucks? screw that... get some suction cups and maybe recruit a friend to help you hold the glass and cut that sucker outta there.. toyota makes a window dam seal... you should look into that
Hot diggidy! $300 just to remove/store/re-install a rear window? Don't go back to that business again, I urge you. My glass guy does such things for $50 plus materials, and he's mobile so it gets done at night when the car's not in use anyhow.
Greg is right, recruit a friend.

Okay...the $300 was a estimate someone told me. One of my mates got a proper quote for his car, and it was $150 -$180. Which seems much more reasonable, but it's still a bit hard to justify, especially when he told me that if it breaks while THEY remove it, "Bad luck. We're not paying for it".
In spite of what TBay told me, i don't really want to go the home option anymore as i would i like my rear demister to work and would like it sealed properly. I don't exactly have the bets working conditions (outside where i can get dusty).
Well, i just got a quote for my car from Obrien (glass company). They wanted basically $200, well, $194. It was funny though, she was all nice and friendly when i was getting the quote, but as soon as i asked her about what will happen if the person removing the glass breaks it, she lost that tone and got all serious. She replied "yes, we have a duty of care. However, if we took all necessary precations to ensure your windshield is correctly removed and it sill broke due to tension within the glass that cannot be seen, you will have to pay for it" Is this normal practice with the glass industry?

You might as well junk the old window. My window cost me 180 and i can have it replaced as many times as I want whenever I want, for life.
If it didn't have Butyl tape on it originally, DO NOT replace the adhesive seal with Butyl tape. Extremely unsafe.
If you can just read up on how to remove glass you could probably do it yourself. And the adhesive seal shouldn't seal itself back up once you start cutting.
