2nd Generation Help removing long center console

Hi, I'm new here and plan on staying here. I live in SoCal (San Diego county) and I just got a 1989 Toyota Camry LE Auto. What I'm trying to do is clean out the interior and I'm having trouble removing the long center console, underneath it is FILTHY!!! theres hair and old food i think but i just wanna clean it out. I removed screws from the armrest, the side and everything, the back part lifts up its just that I dont know how to get the front part out, can anyone offer any help asap. It'll be much appreciated. Thx

you gotta make sure all the screws are out of it... there is 1 on either side of the console at the front of it and there is 1 on either side towards the middle(lengthwise)... make sure you take all the screws out of the black box under the armrest because they fasten the console to an aluminum subframe..just lift up on the back of the console and slide it out and up. You may have to press in the Shift-Lock Override button and put it in a different gear for clearance sake.

Can you even turn it all the way to lock/off? Or can you not pull hte key out when it's in the lock position. If it's the latter, (i'm not sure for US models) mine has a little black button near the ignition and you have to press it while pulling the key out. And yeah, there are two screws in the centre console bin, then there are two more screws holding the two pieces of plastic together right next to the seat, and finally another 2 up the very front, just below and to the side of the fasica panel.

On my Camry, I have to press the black button to be able to turn the key to the off/lock position.
I'd say that is what you need to do my friend.

there's normally a cotter key where that nail is.

If you are trying to get the key further backwards, you won't.
But if you can't move it forward out of the lock position, try tugging on the steering wheel..

So the key won't go past 'off' now? So you can't even start it anymore?

Nope, the key wont go past lock now, its stuck. . . I definitely do not have any money to get the ignition replaced, i gotta fix the allignment, left wheel, smog test, register it, and get insurance. does anybody know how to remove that lock button thing or get it to start? I've tried shaking the wheel, turning it now the steering is locked, i looked up online that its like a safety feature and will go back to normal when the car starts.

you just gotta press the button and fiddle with the key... turn it as far back as possible and then go forward.
