Why they are using 89 Camry for their training video???
Can't they use Chevy astro or Ford crown Victoria whose engines are smoking too at MUCH lower mileage???

My '91 Camry smokes on cold start and smells really nasty, but only for a few seconds. I think it's related to the cold start injector leaking.
You would think that other (read, American) cars would be much more plentiful for smoke-test video subjects.

I would think a very high percentage of all used cars have this problem. Since most people do very little maintenance to a new car. As they drive it with problems that go unnoticed and repaired as it ages. Then when there are a lot of small problems that add up to one large repair bill when the vehicle isn't trustworthy they say, "I have to dump this car, and get a new one." Then thrifty people like us see a "good deal" and buy it. Fix the problems to try to make it better and then some emission test punk treats the car like junk. I'm glad I don't have to deal with emission tests, that would suck and I feel bad for those that do.

I like how they make the comment that the vehicle would fail with one of the situations like, "if an illegal turbocharger was installed."

I'm sure like most things there is a loop hole, right?

It is funny, but cars that use a some oil [perhaps 1 qt pr 2 000mi] due to the worn valve stem seals are LASTING longer and more reliable, if the owner is aware of oil consumption.
First, the oil lubricates the valve stems which cools them down [provided oil has low ash contenht and burns out with minimum deposits, such as valvoline racing.
Second, adding fresh oil at regular bases keeps it cleaner
Third, frequent underhood checks make another items such as leaking hoses etc hard to miss ,which prevents overheating and engine failure due to the coolant loss.

Hmm. I never have to worry about emissions as over here there is always a way to "pass". My Camry did so well during testing that a 3rd gen with noisy exaust also "passed" after running my car a socond time ...

I just watched the video and I must say that is a crock of sh*t lol... I'm glad I don't live in CA... few of the cars around here would pass that test... except for new cars.

Illegal turbocharger? I'm thinking of putting one of those on my truck.

Probably a Garret T-25i (i for illegal)
