2nd Generation BLOWN Radiator Hose !

On the highway while just cruising at around 50 mph I heard something under the hood go POP! 2 seconds later plumes white smoke came billowing out !! I pulled over in a nearby parking lot and Bam blown/popped radiator hose! coolant everywhere! steam cleaning everything in the engine bay. I do think i was the original hose from 1987. Mechanic told me that my thermostat is to blame for the blown hose but i dunno I need you guys opinon on this one. what the hell would make it POP like that ? half the hose is literally ripped open....

Just had the timing belt water pump and various seals replaced could it be the new water pump making exess pressure and the old hose just coudnt take it ?

Im thinking its a stuck closed thermostat combined with a brand new water pump making to much pressure. any ideas are appreciated !!

Good you received some warning of the leak, often this does not happen and the engine overheats.

Which hose, the upper?

If these are the original hoses suggest changing all of them due to age.

Your latest engine work may have caused the pressure to increase slightly and burst what was a marginal condition hose. The coolant system radiator cap has a pressure relief valve that should open around 13 PSI to prevent system damage such as bursting hoses.

If the T-stat were stuck closed the engine would just over heat. The T-stat is closed as the engine warms up and does this without bursting hoses. The pump does not create that much pressure even with T-stat closed.

Also suggest checking or changing the radiator cap.

Yeah the upper hose popped with out any warning and blew coolant all over the place.
It was also the original rad cap and i suspect if did not release the pressure as it should have.

ok so I fixed the radiator hose and replaced the radiator cap but the temp is still a little high.
when driving above 40 the temp goes above the halfway mark noticebly... on a scale from 0 to 100 its gets up to about 65 stays there for a while then slowly goes back down to like a 55and pretty much stays there for the rest of the trip. Its pretty consistent and it is scaring me what could be causing this new problem ?

YES the car has plenty of coolant in the radiator and overflow tank. No I have not replaced the thermostat yet...

Ok so i pretty much replaced everything in the cooling system exept for the radiator itself. Now heres what happens. When I drive on long trips the temp goes all the way up past halfway. So i let it sit for 10 minutes and then open the rad cap to find all my coolant and water is gone.

I think the Radiator sprung a leak its original and its rusty so yeah its gotta be the culprit.
Im thinking that when im driving the pressure goes up and the rad cant take it so then the coolant gets loose.

What do you guys think ?
