Gen1 Transmission problem???

Hey guys,

I have a 90 Camry with 255K (inline 4) and I think the transmission is going on it. because the other day my dad took it in to work and the car ran fine. When he was leaving work the car started up fine but when he put it into any of the gears it would not go! He got help and had a few people push the car and then it started moving just fine.

Do you guys know what can be the problem. I think its the transmission.

This is the first time this has happened!

I dont want to say good buy to the car

thanks in advance!

If the shift cable is OK, might be the torque converter.

If the fluid is black, might change it.

When is the last time it had a fluid change? Not too long ago, mine was very delayed going into gear and would sometimes feel like it was going in and out of neutral when it was dead cold. Warmed up, it was fine. I changed the transmission fluid (looked like engine oil), and now it shifts like new, even in the cold.

Actually the Transmission fluid was changed about 1 year ago.

I have not driven the car after this happened with my dad so i am going to try it tonight and see what happens.

I will check the fluid again. I checked recently and it was fine. But, I will check again.

Thanks for the replies.

I am trying to get a hold of my mechanic and see what he can come up with.

If the car was still after gear was selected , but began to run after it was pushed from the stop I would suspect:
Dragging brakes [frozen to rotor brake pads]
Low differential fluid level [causes temporary seizure of the bearings]
Bad wheel bearings
Burned transmission forward clutch [for drive]or direct clutch for reverse] will not be fixed by pushing the car

Yesterday my dad drove the car to work again and it ran fine!

It wasnt that cold outside so maybe its the cold and bearing seized.

I wish i was in the car when it happened so I could let you guys know a little more about the exact situation.

I will try my best.

Thanks for the advice!
