2nd Generation Pinging issues

Im having a problem here folks, my car pings at moderate load when i run regular gas.But 93 octane seems to keep it to a bare minimum this is not good. Im trying to find the culprit of this but have come up empty so far

AFM has not been touched.
Timing belt and water pump are new as are belts and hoses, the timing is dead on.

What else would cause these cars to ping ?

Try a TN search on cleaning the EGR valve for a 3SFE.

The AutoZone website should have someone about the EGR valve in their Vehicle repair section.

yup the egr was plugged up with sludge REALLY good in fact I should have replaced the damn thing all together. But i used the old one, then bolted on a newer throttle body from an 88 with low miles which was pristine, MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! The engine has A LOT more power now that i never new it even had. The idle is a lot smoother and much less lumpy. The pinging issues have gone down considerably although I can still hear it very slightly. Maybe i need to back up the timing.

The old original egr valve still works flawlessly
my old throttle body was so carboned up carb cleaner wouldn't even put a dent it it.
You literally have to take a wire brush to it and SCRUB it all off the back of the throttle plate !!
IT WAS NASTY

This car was abused and taken on a lot of short trips but that's OK cause it all taken care of.
Now to finish the job with a set of new Spark plugs and wires.

These engines also build up carbon that will cause pinging. I used to require running premium during the summer to eliminate pinging till I started using a fuel system cleaner that also removed carbon deposits, and the pinging went away. I never had a problem with EGR being plugged.
