2nd Generation Starter keeps turning when I let off the key

I did extensive search with no luck!

IN THE MORNING ONLY.

When I let off the key the starter keeps turning.

90 .......Camry ........Auto.......... 189K

I pull the wire on the starter and put + to it and it acts normal.

I use the key again & it stays on again ????

If I just keep moving the ignition back and forth .....

Eventually it will start up and not stay on...

Then the rest of the day it is fine...WOW....

I am guessing the ignition switch contacts sticking ....but

Can it do that even if I turn the key to lock?????

Thank You in Advance

Hopefully there are no additional [ and wrong type] relays are installed in starter circuit.
I would try different ignition switch [ unplug it under dashbord and plug "replacement" in just to try]
All you need to remove black undercover to test. Use screwdriver instad a key]

My V6 has had this same problem for several years now. On really (and I mean really) cold mornings, if I forget to plug in the block heater or if it's parked somewhere I can't plug it in, the same thing happens. However, in my case the relay wasn't the problem.

I replaced my starter last year with one from the scrap yard I worked at (the replacement starter had roughly 200K km on it, mine had 390K km on it). The problem disappeared and the replacement starter worked fine until earlier this week. Again, the same problem if the block is stone cold (and I'm talking 30 degrees below freezing Celcius). The bendix gear is sticking, causing the starter to remain engaged with the flywheel for about three or four extra seconds. I am reasonably sure it is a wear-and-tear issue with the starter itself, not the relay.

2nd Generation Ok Diagnosing this morning SATURDAY

Thnak you for your responses.
I am still wondering why it would NOT do the STICKING when the starter was jumped manually from under the hood, but I believe the bendix could stick in cold temps...I WOULD TOO he he.

First thing this morning I will pull the panel under the column then the lower plastic under the steering wheel to access the ignition switch and try it with a screwdriver. I have another used one in case it sticks to swap out.

If it sticks even with the swapped switch the it must be the bendix or relay as Dr. said. I have another starter as well to finalize the therory.

It's 6 am right now as the wifee has to work on this Sat sooo as soon as she leaves I'm gonna finish this puzzle.

I know my starters been replaced before as It says DENSO USA on the Starter motor while everything else in the car says DENSO JAPAN and the car was made in 87. Someone replaced it with a Junk yard unit from a 90 91 or something. Mabey I should just buy a new one ?

Got a lead on a good used starter from a later 5sfe.
Will it work with the 3sfe ? Will everything fit ?
