sv21 auto to manual swap

Alright I have a 88 Camry 3sfe and my trans has broken splines from input shaft to TC
so I've decided to swap to manual instead of replacement

i have researched and for now the gen 2 v6 trans is a bolt in except the transfer case?

any other advise?

thanks
Jon

Eek, you say you have a 3SFE but you want to put in a 5-speed from a 2VZFE? I believe the best, most efficient, least maddening plan would be to swap-in a 3SFE manual transmission. IIRC, the "S" transmissions are all interchangeable, and the "VZ"/"MZ" transmissions are reasonably interchangeable, but I don't think you'd want to slap-in a heavier V6 tranny on an I4 set-up...

If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to correct me.

Agreed. Plus, IMO it would have different gear ratios due to the larger displacement. I just remembered, when you do a tranny swap, i'm pretty sure you need to swap the ECU as well. So with that in mind, putting the v6 one into an i4 would be a bad idea. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Get a S53, that's the one in my 2ng gen i4 Camry. You definitely know it's compatible and will work. Not so sure about the S51 though.

nah no need for new ECU... i think stock is the S51 though at least my service manual list S51.. but any of the S series tranny will work.. any I4 camry/celica 5spd from 87-97 will work with the car

why/what made you think it was a simple thing to put a V^ tranny into your I4 car? not mocking, just wondering? i must admit, i was starting to wonder about the idea of replacing my 5 speed soon as it's getting tired.

Thanks guys
so the s53 or s51 is the stock m/t on the 3sfe?

Now are the trans mounts the same as the auto trans?
Has anyone done this before?

thanks
Jon

the rear mount is different but it mounts up the same...
it's finally 5spd !!! is my swap.. you can also search jetspeed's thread on his swap he had much more pictures and write up than me. probbly same stuff.. i didn't run into the speed sensor problem as him but that's cause i used a 90 tranny... if i were you i'd get a newer tranny out of a 96 camry.. those are dual syncros and better fork... probbly worth the extra $

The V6 manual trans is stronger, heavier, shorter gears (surprisingly) and would be slightly more difficult to put in the car - and harder to find. You may have trouble sourcing a flywheel (if you have a 6-bolt crank) and you will have to find an MR2 turbo axle carrier bracket.

The 4-cylinder manual will be cheaper, easier to find and has nice long gears for gas mileage (not so great for performance). Any parts you need should be reasonably easy to find at a junkyard and clutch parts, etc. are easy to find or order.

In either case, you have to drill some holes through the firewally and swap a few wires around - nothing major.

The alltrac floorpan, gas tank and rear suspension are all very different between the Alltrac and FWD versions of the Camry... There are no parts that directly swap. There have been conversions, but it is an incredible amount of fabrication for what you end up with.

You can also get shorter gears by going with the Celica 5-speed transmission (used on the 3s-fe or 5s-fe).
