Car boggs out severly under 2500rpm

I have a 86 camry 4cyl 2.0L sedan, about a month ago the alternator went, so i replaced it along with the crappy battery that was in it. A few days ago i was back to school and the alternator went again, but on its way out the car started to run like a bag of crap under 2500, but not all the time, its intermitant but often enough i dont wanna drive it atm.

I bought the thing 6 months ago and have since changed the plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor, timed it, and repaired a vacuum leak.
I got a warrantied alt and put it in, charged the battery.

it idles great about 30% of the time, the other 70% it drops to a low 300rpm and tries to die, when i try to rev it up it struggles to get over 2000 and backfires alot, but as soon as it hits 2500 it runs like a dream.

I have an idea of some things it could be but id like to know others thoughts.
I think it could be my fuel filter, but the intermitant part kind of makes me wonder on that 1.
My ECT sensor could be on its way out, or broke/frayed wires some where.
Theres just to many damn things it could be lol. Any ideas or help would be great =)

Stab in the dark, but could it be a faulty air flow meter?

i dont think its the MAF sensor for a few reasons, unplugging it makes it alot worse, which tells me its working, at least a little.
Im thinking it may be my fuel pump pulling a huge current, im going to do a current ramp on it when i get back into class on monday, and a pressure check to verify it isnt the filter, which i dont think thats it anymore.

my ECT could be fucked as i said, because the pcm changes the fuel and ignition according to the ect readings, so if thats gone and its saying its -50 or +100 out then theres a big problem lol.

It may still be my MAF but i just dont think it is, ill test it with the graphing scanner as well.

Just thought i could get any more ideas, or if anyones had this problem before.
