Windshield Moulding (trim) - removal

1990 Camry 3S-E 5 speed

I need to search for and repair a rainwater leak in the windshield. I have read the factory service manual (FSM), and I can understand how the side trim pieces are removed. They appear to be popped off by carefully inserted a blade under the trim (from the body side of the glass).

But, I'm a little unsure about the top piece (what the FSM calls the upper moulding). The FSM merely explains how to CUT the rubber moulding: "Using a knife, cut off the upper moulding as shown." The image shows a "cut area" space between the glass and the metal body.

Does the upper moulding have to be destroyed then replaced?

Thanks
Doug

2nd Generation Windshield Leak

Everyone I have were destroyed when pulled. Most windshield replacement company's will sell you the piece for cheap...

When I had a leak in the past it was mostly on the very upper piece you are talking about.

Most of mine were from rust where the ceiling meets the windshield(be careful ..if there is rust ....you can make things a whole lot worst when taking out the top molding)

A shabby backyard windshield replacement job was the cause of the other leak. You should use special windshield sealant as it works GREAT and sticks.

Once I just had a small wind pressure leak on the side and used standard clear silicone to fix it.

Hope this helps. ......

Here is what I found.

There is no need to cut the moulding. After removing the side pieces, you can get a screwdriver under the end and gently lift it out. It will bend, but you can get it back to the right shape. And if you want to replace it, the windshield shop will sell a new piece for $14.

I ended up just having the windshield replaced. With the trim pieces removed, there isn't much room to work the sealer into the right place.

New windshield and top trim piece was $150 installed.
