2nd Generation 2nd Gen Loose Automatic Shifter?

Hi guys,

I have a 87 Camry LE with an Auto Trans. Does anyone have a loose shifter? (moves from left to right).

I took the center console out today and it seems that there may be some bushings that keep the shifter from moving left to right.

I searched and didnt see anything.

Thanks in advance!

I fixed my by using brass tube instead of bushings and 2 3/8 inch I.D. washers on each side + wheel bearing grease.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up finding a nylon sleeve in the "Help!" Section at the auto parts store that was snug enough to fit into the tube, used a bench grinder to help "custom" fit it and its nice and snug now. Works like new!

Do you guys know how to remove the shifter top of an automatic transmission? I practiced at the junk yard and after removing the obvious screws, there's the overdrive button left. It seems like it's held back by a spring--after I yanked it to observe it, it looks like I ripped off the overdrive button's wires.

Here's the cause of my loose shifter:

And people, don't put on this zip tie like I did to try and stop the horizontal movement, it will block the motion of pressing in the big button to shift around!

Could you guys go into some more detail on your supplies? I tried some nylon(clear plastic) tubing to act as a spacer but that didn't work...Doctor J, did you use the brass tube on the left side of the 'T' of the shifter going into the worn stock spacers? So I'm thinking your tube acted as one wide spacer so that the shifter hits the little wall where the stock spacer is housed in.

wchain, for nylon sleeve, do you mean the wire loom material?
Thanks guys.
