Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
has anyone taught of swapping the 2AZFE? it has more than enough power(166 hp/161 lb torque2006 rav 4) to get the gen2 up and going....i know its not 3sge etc. but its a 2.4 with vvti...and would be great on gas and an awesome swap for someone who does not want to a perfomance oriented engine like the 3sge motors. I would rather the 2azfe for every day driving. Parts is readily avaiable too...What you guys think?
If my car holds together till the summer, im throwing a 3SGTE in it. Easiest and best option in my case, cause i dont care about MPG. If i did, i would rather leave the engine in there.
If you can handle the custom mounts, axles and significantly more complicated wiring, it would probably fit in the engine bay.
You can get the same performance and fuel economy (though, probably not reliability due to age) from a carefully chosen 3s-ge motor and 3s-fe manual transmission combo. All without any custom work except wiring.

Everybody wants a 3SGTE in their gen 2...I am not talking about PERFORMANCE oriented gen 2 owners...this could be for guys that don't want a motor like 3sge/3sgte..2AZFE has enough power, realiablity and a bit of technology.
Hey Charlie, there a guys in the MR2 forum with the 2GRFE in their cars...the wiring would be a challenge, but it can be done...mounts can be fabricated etc. It just takes on person to attempt it...you know what i mean...
The 3rd gen 3sge would be the best to swap...not a lot of headache with wiring like the BEAMS. but its hard to find them.

So if you dont want Performance, then the 3SFE should be perfect for you.
Well the 2azfe is the equivalent of the 2vzfe but with better mileage. I dont know the 2AZFE Just seems like alot of extra work for the 2nd gens.

There is just about as much room in the Camry engine bay as there is in an MR2 engine bay. If somebody really wanted to spend that much time/money on one of those motors, anything is possible. The cost/benefit analysis doesn't work out in any way I can see though.
I considered putting in a taller final drive in the 5-speed AWD trans that is going in when I do my swap - it would get me about 10-15% better mileage - but adding up the cost, it would take 20k+ miles to pay it back with $4/gal gas. Is that worth it? Who knows...

3s-fe with a 5-speed in good running condition has adequate performance and will get you 29-37 mpg city/hwy (personal experience). What more do you want? Why would you spend thousands of dollars to get a small performance bump with the same gas mileage to "save" money?

Charlie and JMSports are right. The only reason to do a swap (wiring nightmare or not) is to improve performance. If you want better fuel mileage with moderately improved performance, buy a 1988-1991 Corolla GT-S with a 4AGE under the hood. I got 35mpg city on mine, plus it held up to my friend's 2.0L DOHC neon--whether that says more about the 4AGE or the Neon, I won't speculate.
