I encountered a problem today and i think it might be because of the pod filter. I noticed that when you quickly open the throttle (quck cracks with your wrist) several times, it would start to idle funny and then start to struggling to idle. At this point opening throttle did not raise the rpm, not even WOT. I didn't leave it long enough for it to stall out, but when the revs dipped down to about 500rpm the engine check light would turn on and then turn off when it raised. This has happened only once - today; it's usually driven gently with care but today my 'friend' was pushing it pretty hard.
He said it was slightly hesitating when you initially open the throttle.
My auto teacher thought that it was because of the pod filter allowing enough air that the AFM can't keep up on initial surges of air, which is why it was hesitating.
What's everyone's thoughts? Has this happened to anyone else?
Your auto teacher sounds clueless. Unless there is a blockage of airflow due to the filter, or too much air being forced (which i dont think would make a difference) then the filter wouldnt do a damn thing. I believe that the stock filter is better anyway is it not?
I did a diag test and i don't think it pull any codes, it was flashing constantly with no pauses, so i assume it was 8 consecutive over and over again. Took it for a little drive today and it was fine.
What do you think is causing the Charlie?

If the CEL is constantly flashing in .5 second increments, that means no codes. I'm also not aware of a mode of the 3s-fe ECU that would flash the CEL for any reason other than to check the codes. Maybe there is a short that puts the ECU in diagnostic mode? This would also mess with the timing and possibly cause the running like you describe.

What's your reasoning behind this conclusion?
Ive heard from other members that the stock airbox is the best option for this motor.

When you say this, are you referring to when the check light came on whenever the revs dipped down to 500rpm and then turn back off when it raised a little bit?
Have any vague ideas as to where the short could possibly be?

Ive heard a couple of people on this board reccomend K&N drop in filters for this motor as a good upgrade for the 3SFE. Is it really worth it? What differences does it make? Mabey you should switch back to stock box with K&N.

charlie, correct me if im wrong, but if the car is getting down to 500 rpm or so, wont the check engine light pop on because the car is about to stall and is just reading the key in on position????? i have a pod filter on my car for 2 years now, has always run great, and never had a bit of problems with it.

I guess i've got some gremlin in my car somewhere. I'll try cleaning the throttle body, ISC valve and EGR sometime and see how it goes.
