when to replace timing belt

I can't seem to locate a recommended change date for a 90 Camry, 4-cylinger engine. It was last done 4 yr ago at 63K, now at 118. My impression is every 60K but I was wondering if anyone knew more positively. It doesn't seem to be in the car manual or shop manual. Thanks!

I've been told to replace the water pump too while this is going on. Sound good if nothing has been a problem with it yet?

I've always been under the impression that you do it every 5 years or 100 000km's (average of 20k's a year), but i've noticed people are now changing the earlier, say 70k.

Yeah, do the water pump since you're working in that area and a new thermostat to go with.

90k is toyota recomended timing belt change.

I would personally replace the cam seals and crankshaft seal along with the water pump and thermostat at the same time with some fresh coolant. If you have been running green coolant stay with it. toyota didn't come out with the Red coolant till the early mid 90's I believe so our gen camry's ran from the factory green.
BUT if you want piece of mind flush the coolant correctly and then you can run Beautiful Toyota red coolant!

Good luck

60,000 miles is correct for the first 3 generations of Camry. Starting with the generation 4 Camry, the recommendation is 90,000 miles.

Thank you Mike. Guess I better get it done and the associated replacement parts as well. BTW, is the Camry the sort of engine that is destroyed whent the belt breaks or just stops.

The 2VZ-FE engines were designed with non-interference pistons

The 4 cylinder 3SFE engine is definitely a non-interference engine, so no damage will be done if the belt does break. However, as mentioned above, you will be stranded.

What's the deal with the pink coolant? I use the red stuff in my Turbo Camry....

Almost all Toyota factory motors are non-interferance, even the turbo performance models (3s-gte, for example).

rule of thumb is 60,000 miles. or the other option is wait till it breaks, the 3sfe isnt an interference motor
