Overheated - now car won't run

I have a 1989 Camry LE with a 2.0L/automatic, 231k miles on it. It blew a hose and overheated badly, now it will not run. The engine cranks over but it will not fire up and run. The last time I tried to start it, I noticed antifreeze leaking from the gasket where the exhaust manifold turns and goes under the car and hooks into the exhaust pipe. I am guessing it needs a new cylinder head gasket at the minimum... Can anyone advise what it might cost to have this work done at a shop ???? Would it be cheaper just to have a junkyard engine swapped in ??? I can do basic maintenance stuff, don't have the tools or training to do a cylinder head repair or engine swap myself... I am guessing a Toyota dealer would charge a fortune for this ??? Any thoughts on the cost or what parts might be needed are appreciated. -Mike in Kentucky-

I'm no expert but I believe a warped head is also a possibilty if your car overheated as bad as you make it sound. This is due to the iron block and aluminum head combo that the 3S-FE motor uses. Perhaps a swap with low mileage engine is due? I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in shortly but in the meantime I suggest to search the Gen 2 forums on your problem. Good luck.

As kesando said, you're almost guaranteed to have warped the head. No compression=no start-up. It might actually be cheaper to swap-in a scrap yard engine rather than either a) having the head machined, or b) having the head replaced.

Are you confident enough to do an engine swap yourself? Tools aren't really the problem, they're pretty basic. It's time...lots and lots of time.
