Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
ok so my first car was my 1990 camry 5spd and i did horrible ricer things to her. now that ive grown and am past that stage i would like to get her going again. i am currently driving around in my 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V which is spraying 100 and itll be a 150 shot on 10.3:1 compression when i get the funds. i have a nitrous car and my camry has been sitting around. it time she gets a turbo to fool around with. i used to know every spec on the 3s-fe but have forgotten so much in the 2 years i been doing up the nissan.
i just rebuilt the motor so its basically brand new so age isnt an issue.
now i want to know about tuning. whats the best way to tune with the AFM, adjust the cog in the AFM or a piggyback unit.
im obsessed with making sleepers, and making cars that arent supposed to be fast, fast witht thier facotry motor. so dont tell me to swap in a 3sgte cuz i already did that in a friends mr2 and am not looking into another swap.

This is an economy motor, and it just isnt built for producing large amounts of horsepower. Thats why people do the swap. Everyone on here will tell you that youll be better off with a swap, because tuning/modifying an economy engine is like turbocharging a lawnmower...theres absolutley no point.
sweet lord jesus is that an aluminum win on a GEN2 in your avatar???
Just for that you get the "SEARCH" response!
i have been searching nothing about tuning has come up. yes it is. and its no longer on the car ive outgrown that stage. lol

i dont really care about how fast it actually is, its more of an intro into turbocharging in a car i already have sitting around, and i wont care one bit if it blows up.
so now to answers about tuning

Get a USDM 90+ 3s-gte or JDM 90-93 3s-gte turbo manifold, turbo, downpipe (stock or aftermarket), oil pan... that's about it. The custom intake and intercooler if you want and you are pretty much done. Add a RRFPR for extra fuel on boost, handle the oil and water lines, etc.
A 3s-gte is still probably a better plan, but turboing the stock motor will still get you some smiles.

1990 Camry DX 3S-FE 5spd - The original white90dx; gone but not forgotten
Even if you turbo the 3sfe it wont match up to your Sentra SER Spec V
with all the manifolds and turbo your may get about 170 HP out of it.
But its life will be significantly decreased.

Just keep the boost levels low, like 5psi. I turbocharged a 2000 S-10 pickup with a 2.2L engine. You want to talk about "economy" engines? This was notoriously weak engine. Anyway, I did a homebrew turbo setup on it and set it to 5 psi, but would occasionally peak at 8-10 momentarily. Even at 5 psi, it was WELL worth the effort and gave it a really nice kick. Never dynoed it, but there was definately a good amount of power increase. It ran fine, and this engine had 115,000 miles on it, and was my daily-driver. Your Camry sounds more like it will be a low-budget toy, so I say go for it!
(PLEASE remove the wing though!!! )

Yeah.... quite a story. I ordered it last Oct. for a replacement for my '08 that I signed a 1 year lease on (Toyota corporate lease deal). There's a 4 month lead-time on the lease orders. Anyway, I canceled the order because of some uncertainties at work with mileage reimbursement. So life goes on, and out of the blue I get an email saying that my '09 Taco is in. I'm like , since I had verification that it was canceled.
I could have just refused it, but I really wanted to see it anyway. I came, I saw, I signed.
My friend has an '03 spec-v. It's got cams, full exhaust system, cold air, and it's chipped. The thing is seriously quick. Just wanted to throw that one out there.
I'd like to see how this 3sfe turbo project goes. Keep us updated.
haha yeah i love my spec. its got I/H/ catless exhuast, adjustable exhaust cam sprocket set to -4, balance shaft chain cut, solid motor mounts, 07 headgasket (07 is MLS), P&P intake manifold, P&P Throttle Body, and the 100shot. its a fast little car lol
as for the rising rate FPR does that replace the stock FPR or go before/after it stock one inline. also whats the general area i should set the ignition timing to i can fine tune it later but a starting point would be helpful thanks guys i know people who usually ask this arent serious about doing it, but i am so appreciate the help
