1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I finally got around to taking some pics tonight while the weather was nice.
I picked it up last spring in Richmond. A 2-owner car, bought in Ohio, but spent most of it's life in Florida.
Pretty clean, but the paint is wearing thin from the sun in some spots.
Just turned 189k this week.
Put in a steering wheel from an early Paseo. Only issue is the turn signals don't shut off automatically after turning.
Dropped in a new Sony head unit. I had a Clarion Pro-Audio unit in that I picked up used, but I couldn't see the display with it so low in the dash & found out (after I installed it) that the CD player didn't work.
Infinity Kappas in the rear deck (matching Infinity 3.5" in front using the stock boxes)
Blaupunkt amp mounted to the rear seat
The amp powers a pair of 6.5" OZ woofers mounted under the rear deck.
I took off the deck cover & removed the insulation for better sound. The speakers are mounted to a piece of MDF & use factory holes in the rear deck to let the bass pass through.
I'm not going to win any audio competitions, but it adds a little punch to the music & I keep the full trunk.
The head unit has rear aux input via RCA. I ran the RCA to mini-jack cable in the center console. I drilled a hole for the cable and added a rubber grommet. The cable tucks inside the lower compartment when not in use.
On the list are adding new wheels to get rid of the steelies, tint, black mirrors, chopping 1 coil off each spring & a set of Hella driving lights.
In all I only have under $240 in the stereo. I picked up the speakers used from the pick-n-pull ($8 a pair), used amp (E-Bay $40), head unit was on clearance at wally-world ($100) + misc for wiring.
Enjoy.

Very nice! It hadn't even occurred to me to use a Paseo steering wheel to replace my scratched original one... (I can get a leather one that'll match my grey interior for free)
That car looks damned near mint, I'm green with envy. Now get a 5-speed in there!

Honda my A$$, you just can't kill a Yota...
I was at the Pick-n-pull & saw the Paseo wheel already off & on the drver's seat. I figured it was worth a shot, so I tested it on a Camry while I was there.
It's a little thicker & smaller which I like.
I wish I could switch to a 5-speed, but I already have a project car that needs attention.

for the steering wheel, yank off the cover & it's 1 wire & 1 nut. I don't remember the size, but I had it in my portable Craftsman set.
The rear speakers are a 6.5". I think I have close to 20 pairs of speakers from the junkyard over the past couple years. I've had some good luck when it comes to speakers.
I've had good luck with the Kappa series speakers. They have great bass with minimal distortion. I have a set of Diamond Audio 6.5" I may stick in there later for a sound comparison. The Infinity 3.5" in the front really sound great despite their size. The factory box makes a huge difference in adding to the bass. If I were to do it again, I would cut some of the metal in front of the speaker mounting point on the dash as it sits directly in front of the tweeter.
I wound up chickening out on cutting the coils. I had everything ready, but something is telling me not to, even though it's only 1 coil.
For starters, I couldn't get the spring compressors in to compress the spring at all. 2nd, if I cut 1 coil off, I don't thik I could get it off the strut without making a second cut.
I was tempted to just pull the strut & make the cut with it off the car, but I'm 99% sure my alignment would be off when I put it back together no matter how careful I was & I don't feel like forking over another $65 when I had it done just a month ago.
I'll most likely wind up waiting a little longer & just buying some aftermarket springs.
I did a 2nd transmission drain & fill this afternoon. I'm going to do it again next weekend & the following until it's cleaner.

Please do not cut your springs! Not a very safe thing to do.
It depends on the setup of your car. I chose not to because there weren't as many coils on the strut as I thought.
On Turbobricks (the Volvo board I hang out at), there are hundreds of cars running cut springs.
^ minus 2 coils all the way around
^ Cut coils + 17" rims
^ my Volvo 740 I was driving before the Camry - 1 cut coil all the way around

wow that is exactly my car! I've got a different audio system, of course, and I didn't get new rims just opted for 2000 Camry factory wheelcovers. Same color, interior, model. Cool!
Got any engine photos? Love those Oz drivers....

141k miles, failed emissions, in for repairs ugh.
The engine is a filthy mess right now. When I got it, it had the typical power steering leak which I had repaired.
After that, it developed 2 leaky valve cover gaskets which I haven't repaired yet. I ordered the kit from Amazon, but they sent me the wrong kit which didn't include the spark plug tube gaskets. Once I have them, I can get the leaks under control.
I'm going to do some deep cleaning when I tackle the gaskets. I cleaned the throttle body & AMM about a month ago and the intake plenum is filthy inside. I'm going to remove it & completely degrease it.

Ok, brain fart..AMM? I hear ya on the leaky valve cover gaskets. My car is in the shop right now due to failed emissions and I'm going to hopefully have those gaskets done too. I would rather do it myself, but my county helps with a bit of $ so I'm taking advantage of it. I've got leaking PS too, how did you fix yours?
What do you have the Oz crossed over at? Are they pretty solid in an IB set up like that? I'm running old Oz subs right now that I've had forever. They're great but take a big box.
That's a really clean car you've got there. Take care of it and it'll last practically forever. Toyotas rule.

The Mass Air Meter = AMM
PS hose was best fixed by paying somebody to do it. Toyota wanted $400 for just the hose. Aftermarket hose was $200 + labor ($400 IIRC). I crawled under the car to see how bad it would be & decided to save my blood, knuckles & sanity by letting a shop fix it.
I'll check on the x-over for the woofers & let you know tomorrow. They sound pretty good alongside the Infinifys even w/o a box. I had a JBL 8" sub, but I just couldn't get it to fit under the rear deck cleanly.
