Removing Emissions?

Is it possible to strip some of the emissions off my 89' camry 2.0 like all the EGR stuff and fuel evaporative emission control and just plug the lines, or will this have negitive effects on the performance/driveability?

Also I have two O2 sensors that I can see, so I think it is a California car if that makes any difference.

Why do you want to do this? If it's for performance reasons, don't even bother.

To get rid of the extra crap I don't need. Also I'm the kind of person that gets a fair amount of personal satisfaction from doing such a thing. Kind of like burning a piece of styrofoam on Al Gore's front lawn.

I got my two Camrys mixed up. The one I want to remove the emissions on only has one O2 sensor which also means it does not have the EGR temp sensor that is only on the Cali cars I think.

The computer uses the O2 sensor to determine air fuel ratio. If you remove it the computer will go to a default fuel setting that is typically richer resulting in lower a MPG.

The EVAP system does not require any HP.

The engine is setup to use the EGR to lower gas temps. If the valve is not working the engine may ping when under load.

Removing the EGR components will burn the exhaust valves?

You can remove all of it and have no adverse affects on the engine/ performance. It's only purpose is to reburn exhaust gasses, the ecu doesn't even "see it". None of the JDM 3SFE engines have the EGR systems.

Burn exhaust valves? Not a chance..

The EGR system lowers exhaust gas temps, helping the motor run cooler and lowers pumping loses, allowing the motor to get better mileage in some cases. If the ECU is tuned to work with the EGR system, it should run better with it (the JDM ECUs are tuned to run without it - different timing and fuel). If it is still working, leave it in place.

That said, I have run with and without the EGR system with no major effects either way. I ran without it to get rid of possible vacuum leaks when I had my turbo 3s-fe, but have left it in place otherwise.

-Charlie

PS. Yes, it would contribute to burned valves. You can think/say otherwise, but I would trust the guy that has seen thousands of these cars (Doctor J)... or even me, who has run well over 100k miles on three different 3s-fe in various states of modification (stock, IHE, turboed, etc.).
